Rural NSW’s chronic shortage of practicing doctors has prompted a joint initiative by The Land and the Rural Doctors Association of NSW (RDA NSW) aimed at encouraging more country students to study medicine.
As part of a raft of activities planned to mark the newspaper’s centenary next year, The Land is committing to establishing a scholarship to help cover the living away from home expenses incurred by undergraduate medicos.
The Land starts its 100th year of publishing on January 27, 2011.

The Rural Doctors Association of Australia (RDAA) is urging the key rural independent MPs to require an incoming Government to introduce formal rural proofing of all proposed health policies and programs. Rural proofing would require policy-makers to genuinely consider the impact of new policies on rural communities and their existing rural health services, to ensure the policies would work in individual rural settings and would not have detrimental consequences.
Rural proofing for health is mandatory in the United Kingdom, which also has a Commission for Rural Communities.

The hung parliament could be the best thing for rural health if independent MPs stand up for their electorates, according to the Rural Doctors Association of Australia (RDAA).
Dr Nola Maxfield, RDAA President, said that with three independent MPs from rural seats, there is a unique opportunity for rural Australia to have a real voice in how health is provided in rural Australia.
“Now is the time to move to address the rural health crisis,” Dr Maxfield said.
The Rural Doctors Association of Australia (RDAA) says it is staggered that Julia Gillard and Tony Abbott are spending so much time debating whether they will have another election debate when 4600 rural Australians are dying each year because they can't get adequate access to healthcare.
"We are astonished that the leaders are taking up so much time arguing about whether they will debate each other again before polling day...and now Mr Abbott has revived Kevin Rudd's idea of establishing a Debates Commission! RDAA President, Dr Nola Maxfield, said.
