APPLICATIONS ARE NOW CLOSED

The Dr Andrew Egan Rural Medical Scholarship was established in 2021 to honour the memory of Dr Andrew Egan who was a dedicated, procedural GP VMO in Cooma for more than 30 years. Dr Egan was a past President of the Rural Doctors’ Association NSW (RDA NSW) and well respected colleague, friend, father, and husband of wife Anne.

He worked as a GP at Bombala Street Surgery, providing VMO services to the local hospital in obstetrics, anaesthetics, emergency medicine and general in-patient medical care. Dr Egan was a long-time supervisor of GP registrars, and many GPs have appreciated his care and teaching. Dr Egan enjoyed meeting keen, young doctors and was passionate about rural medicine.

This scholarship is open to medical students from rural NSW who have relocated to study at university in NSW or ACT, and who currently are in their 2nd year of medicine.  The scholarship will be awarded to 2 medical students to cover the costs of living away to study and to provide the opportunity for successful applicants to receive advice and support throughout their degree from members of the RDA NSW Committee.  Each of the recipients will be awarded a total $7,500 inc. GST, paid in 2 payments during the year.

Applicants will be required to submit a 2,000-word essay format application incorporating why they are studying medicine, career goals and an understanding of the role & value of rural doctors in Australia.

Applications closed on 29th February 2024.  Applicants will be advised by 11th April 2024 if they have been successful or not.
